GLASSBLOWING

WHAT IS GLASSBLOWING?

Glassblowing is the art of forming glass into shape by hand (and mouth).

It’s an ancient technique; in fact, the first known records of blown glass date back to the first century B.C.

Glassblowing consists of using a blowpipe to inflate molten glass by mouth, thus creating a glass bubble that is then formed and molded into the desired shape. Starting with this glass bubble and using just a few basic tools and the artisan’s imagination, the final designs are endless.

Glassblowing is an art that few people master these days, and high-quality, unique designs are only produced by experts in the craft. Glassblowing demands concentration, expertise, and an eye for detail in order to produce the beauty and quality for which the craft is known.

Yes, it takes years to become a master glass artisan. But before our glass artisans can work their magic, the process starts with a few very important raw materials.

RAW MATERIALS

One of the most important steps in creating a stunning decanter is choosing the raw materials.

We opt for borosilicate glass, which is a combination of boric oxide, silica sand, ash, and a few other compounds in small quantities. Another popular type of glass used for decanters is crystal, which is a leaded glass. Unfortunately, at times the lead in the crystal can begin to leech into the drink inside the decanter. For this reason, we solely use lead-free borosilicate glass.

When it comes to glass products, you want the very best. While it’s true that all glass is fragile, some varieties — like borosilicate glass — are stronger and more durable than others. At Prestige Decanters, we take pride in creating intricate and durable blown glass decanters that will last for generations so we opt for borosilicate glass.

Due to its quality, borosilicate glass is the most expensive option. But for our uses, we find it to be well worth the additional cost.

Of course, borosilicate glass isn’t the only option for glassware. We wrote much more about borosilicate glass, as well as the other options for making glassware and why we choose borosilicate glass, right here. GLASS ARTISANS AT WORK

Our decanters are meticulously handcrafted. Glassblowers use their blowpipes to collect the molten glass and then the artistry begins. Depending on the design, the craftsman might heat the glass again with a torch as they roll the glass against a wooden block.

From there, a glassblower will use the pipe to blow air into the piece, creating a hollow cavity. When you hold glass barware in your hand, it’s hard to imagine that the glass was once flexible and pliable. But the artisan will stretch, shape, and mold the heated glass, employing delicate tools as they construct our signature designs. Watching the artisans at work is magical.

Glass, light, and whiskey are brilliant in their own respects, but bringing them together can be breathtaking. When you purchase a product from PrestigeHaus, our goal is to leave you (or the receiver of the gift) speechless and awe-inspired.

Skill, craftsmanship, and an impeccable eye for detail are just a few of the elements that play a key role in the creation of our decanters. We’re confident that our dedication to the craft, extensive expertise, and the form and function of our products separate us from the rest.

FINAL TOUCHES

We’re proud to say that our decanters offer a unique combination of function and form, with function playing an important role. After all, what good would one of our decanters be if it couldn’t keep your spirit of choice safe and secure? That’s where our ground glass stopper comes into play.

Our decanters are made with an airtight ground glass stopper. Each stopper is handcrafted to fit the decanter perfectly and create a durable seal that lasts a lifetime. This seal prevents air from mixing with the liquor, preserving its pure essence. It also stops the alcohol from slowly evaporating. Never again will you have to worry about your spirits losing their distinctive flavor or evaporating into thin air.

If you want to preserve your libations for future celebrations, make sure to choose a decanter that will deliver an airtight seal for generations to come.
