Bad-Assed Scotch Gifts for Your Groomsmen

You bravely proposed…the answer was a resounding “Yes!”

Now, you need a stellar team to help you get through the planning and execution of the wedding process.  It’s time to choose your groomsmen.  They are truly great friends.  You’ve had great times sitting back and relaxing together with a stogie and a bottle of great scotch. You’ve sweated together over a cold brew while moving your furniture into your new house. They have always been there for you, come hell or high water. Now, they have been assigned their groomsmen tasks.  And your task is to show them how much you appreciate all they do for you!

But you probably have questions. What should you get for your groomsmen? When should you give them their presents? This article will help you navigate these tricky wedding etiquette questions.

When should you give them the gift?

There are multiple times when it would be appropriate to gift your groomsmen.  Gifts can be given at the bachelor party, rehearsal dinner, at a suit fitting, or whenever you happen to be hanging out with them. If your gift is something they can enjoy at the bachelor party, then you might want to choose that day to present it to them.

Personalized Groomsman Decanter Set. This decanter set is fabulous! It has options to engrave four lines to give your groomsmen a more personal message.  It also has an airtight seal to prevent that treasured scotch from floating away.  You can take it even a step further by adding two or four more engraved glasses along with a personalized wooden display box!  If you are going to give them a decanter set, then it would be nice to give them a bottle of scotch to go with the set. (Don’t worry, we have some good scotch ideas for you below.)

Another time option for gift giving is at the rehearsal dinner.  Instead of socks, ties, or cufflinks, get them the Barrel Stave Glencairn and Cigar Holder (add a Glencairn glass and cigar, too!).  This unique gift can hold a special occasion cigar and a Glencairn glass. They can enjoy this gift today, tomorrow…whenever!  This favor is made of upcycled barrel staves from Kentucky and California distilleries. So you are also helping the planet. Tip: if you choose to give the gift during the rehearsal dinner, you can put the gifts on the dinner table in front of each recipient’s seat. That way, you can spare yourself the ceremony of giving out each gift individually.

How much money should you spend?

The traditional rule is to spend between 10-25 percent of the costs the groomsmen have incurred during the whole wedding process, per the Groovy Groomsmen Gifts website.  This would include wedding attire, airfare, hotel, etc. (Don’t include the bachelor party or wedding gift, of course.) SoFi Learn puts the average expense total for a groomsman at around $400.  They are coughing up a lot of money to represent and support you on your big day! So you want to be sure to let them know you appreciate it.

You can expect to dish out between $40-102 for your groomsman gifts, based on the traditional rule. We have some spectacular gifts in this price range for the scotch-drinking groomsman!

If you have a large wedding party—say, 12 groomsmen—then this can get really expensive really quickly. You may have to opt for a smaller dollar amount if you have a big wedding party. If you only have one or two groomsmen, you might be able to splurge a little more.

Best Scotch for the Groomsmen

Getting Scotch glasses, decanters, and accessories is great. It really is! But don’t forget to give them some scotch to go with those gifts. Here are some scotches to consider:

Glenlivet Founder’s Reserve ($65). Its creamy sweetness originates from the selective use of first-fill American oak casks, still so full of Bourbon character complemented by the traditional oak. This sweetness contrasts wonderfully with the liveliness of zesty fruits. It’s an expression that is truly worthy of its reserve status.

Macallan 12 years ($80). This one balances the rich fruit and oak spice of sherry-seasoned European oak with lighter flavors of citrus, coconut, and vanilla from sherry-seasoned American oak for a perfectly harmonized flavor. It was awarded unanimous Double Gold upon its release.

Caol Ila 12 Year Single Malt ($95). A seductive brininess and waves of oily peat-reek greet the olfactory sense. The palate entry finds a surprisingly buttery-creamy leaning along with the peat. At mid-palate, the flavor becomes concentrated, oily, malty sweet, and only moderately peaty. It ends on a sweet malty note. This scotch builds from stage to stage, each phase being better than the last.

The best of the Highlands and coastal influences with centuries of local distilling tradition are what make this whisky so exquisite. It’s a 2019 Gold Medal Winner.

Don’t forget the ring-bearer!

Don’t forget the other people at the wedding that you could buy gifts for. Sometimes there are members of the wedding party that gets overlooked. Don’t make that mistake! You might want to find a little something special for the ushers, ring bearer, Father of the Groom, Father of the Bride, and the officiant. (And yes, many officiants would love a whiskey glass set, too! But you may want to find something more age-appropriate for the ring bearer.)
